Computer Bound? 5 Ways to Lose Weight Even While Typing

If you spend an average of 3 hours a day working on the computer, in one year’s time, that would equal 1,095 hours of sitting. Whether you’re checking your blog or emails, working or watching videos, you most like are sitting pretty still for that entire time, except for your fingers. How can you get the rest of your body actively engaged so that you can even lose weight when typing?

1. Set a timer to go off in 5 minute intervals. Every 5 minutes, get up and do 10 jumping jacks or 10 push-ups. You can do 10 of anything. Get creative, move around, and then right back to typing. You will feel re-energized. The physical movement will clear the cobwebs from your brain. Maybe the trend will catch on in the workplace!

2. Use a resistance band. Put a round resistance band around your ankles. As you type, move your legs out and in. You can keep your feet low or lift them parallel to the floor. If you sit in a cubicle, no one will ever see what you’re doing and you’ll be getting fit while you work. Shoot for 3 sets of 15 over the course of your computer time.

3. Stretch constantly. Being in the same position in front of the computer leads to stiffness and sore muscles. Try these easy stretches to help you relax:

Tilt your head to the right like you’re trying to have your ear touch your shoulder. Switch sides.

Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders and hold. Exhale slowly and relax your shoulders.

Reach your arms high in the air as if trying to touch the sky and hold.

Place your palms together chest high as if in prayer. Slowly push your palms together while lifting your elbows slightly. Hold for 5 seconds. Rotate your hands so your fingertips are pointing towards the ground. Hold for 5 seconds and release.

4. Stand up when reading. If you’re reading a long email or article, stand up. Enjoy a different posture and sit down when you’re done. Stand up again when you hit another long passage to read. Stand up as often as possible.

5. Sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair. Sitting on the ball will improve your posture at the computer. It will also strengthen your abs and back without even trying.

Weight Loss After Pregnancy

It's an obvious truth that after giving birth most women's bodies make considerable adjustments. Broad hormonal changes are common and mood swings are not unusual. But one thing that many women will focus on (sometimes too much) is losing that weight and body fat gained during pregnancy.

In order to do that safely and in a way that produces beneficial long-term results, take it slow and steady. Weight reduction and regaining muscle tone after birth takes time.

Hype in the media about rapid weight loss after pregnancy is common. Articles are written on celebrity moms that show them making miraculous changes after birth to regain those million dollar figures.

But such individuals usually have better than average metabolic systems in the first place. That's part of what gives them an edge in that profession.

They also have very expensive consultants, trainers and money to burn on equipment. The average women could forego a lot of needless guilt by not trying to emulate their results. Instead, focus on what's normal and average for most new moms.

It generally takes up to 6 months for a woman's body to return to 'normal' after giving birth. Normal, here, just means the average metabolic rate and hormonal amounts that were experienced before conception. In some areas, and to some degree, those norms may never return. Motherhood often produces some permanent changes.

Calorie reduction should not be an overriding concern during a period of breast feeding. Apart from the still-required (though somewhat less) additional amount of energy, the added stress of worrying about weight is not something new mothers need. Night feeding and continual round-the-clock care for a year or more is difficult enough without unnecessary, self-imposed psychological burdens.

For the first few months, the focus should be very much on eating a healthy diet. A 2000 calorie diet that includes 50% carbohydrates, 30% proteins, 10% fat with adequate fiber is a good common sense starting point.

Notice the numbers don't add up to 100%. Every diet should leave some leeway for enjoyment, increase or decrease of the other factors, etc. Going to extremes is the most common mistake most make when considering nutrition.

Moderate exercise is good, but here again the keyword is 'moderate'. New mothers are busy enough without having to worry about whether they are getting that 5-mile run in every morning. The focus should be on gradually increasing stamina, tone and overall fitness. The goals should be mood-elevation and general health, not looking like a movie star.

After a few months, the program can be stepped up to desired levels in a graded way. The average gain during pregnancy is between 25-35 lbs and during birth about 12-14 of this is lost immediately. The other 12-21 pounds can be shed over 6-8 months without risk. Take it slow and steady and your results will persist over the long term.

In this fast paced life that we have now, losing weight is something that a lot of people try to squeeze into their busy lives.

It should be said that gaining and then maintaining a healthy weight range should really be looked at as a lifestyle option, rather than a short term project. If you need to lose weight quickly however, then you need to be bang on in the way you execute your weight loss plan. In this article we will look at some factors that should be incorporated into your rapid weight loss system. It’s not hard to see why a rapid weight loss program has appeal.

There is absolutely no doubt that people who lose weight experience a massive upsurge in self esteem, in addition to their improved health; so the sooner these things are experienced the better. Foods that have been fried, especially deep fried should be cut out of the diet altogether as they contain too much fat that is harmful to the system. Grilled food is better as the fat is not retained in the food or if it is, it is only very little so it is healthier for you. It is not a good idea to cut out carbohydrates altogether as they are the fuel your body needs to keep going. This type of diet supplies between 1,000 and 1,500 calories per day and it is not too difficult to lose about a pound or so in weight every day.

Never underestimate how important, the support of your friends and family can be when executing a rapid weight loss plan. Ultimately, discipline will be required to see you plans come to fruition. Do you know there are three easy steps that you can implement today that can get you into weight loss mode? All of us are looking for methods to lose weight quickly and get the most of our time. So, by implementing these 3 tips, you can definitely burn more body fat and see the results quite quickly. Without wasting more time, lets dive into it.

Step 1 Do your cardio after your intense weight training. This is by far one of the best method I have seen working for my clients. For those who do not know me, I have been doing personal training for more than 7000 hours since the 2004 and I find that my clients that follow my instructions and do their cardio after their weight training lose the most fat! The reason behind this is because we are glucose depleted after an intense weight training session. Hence when you hit the cardio, your body will start using body fat straight away. If you do cardio before you weight training, you will waste time spending 10 to 15 minutes burning the sugar in your body and then only the body fat. Then when you do weight training, you will not have the power and strength to complete an intense weight training session. During weight training, you only use sugar. So, it is more effective to do weight training first, burn of the sugar and then hit the cardio machine for maximum fat loss. If you are not use to do your cardio after weight training, you will feel that your body is heavy and find it really tough. Do it slowly. Do your cardio workout at the intensity of 70 % of your max heart rate the after 5 to 7 minutes; you feel that you can go on forever!

Step 2 Now this is a bit of a controversial issue. Some pros do not like this method and some do. I personally experienced great results from it. It is called low card dieting. Yeah, you have heard of it like a thousand times. I am not a dietitian, but for my modeling days, I use to go low carb for 5 days and then eat normal on Saturday and Sunday. This is not Atkins diet. I do not eat lots of fats. I eat lots of vegetables; eat lots of fish, egg whites and chicken. I also drink lots of soup because I found out that soup could really satisfy my appetite. The bulk of the meals come from vegetables because it is healthy and keeps your stomach full. You will feel a bit tired during your weight training but that is normal. You are not there to do the World’s Strongest Man event. The key to maintain on this diet is that you have to eat 5 to 6 meals a day. Always plan ahead. I cannot emphasize enough. You need to plan what time you eat and what you will eat. This will help you cope up with all the hunger pangs. If you fail to plan you plan to fail.

Step 3 This tips is actually very easy. It won’t need you to put in more time into you workout or change your lifestyle. If you have been doing cardio religiously 3 to 5 times a week, why not supercharge your fat loss by using a heart rate monitor. By using a heart rate monitor, you can laser target you fat burning zone. With the heart rate monitor you would also know whether you are really tired or pure lazy. I workout too, I know. Sometimes I feel like I just don’t have the stamina but when I checked my heart rate, it is just fine and sometimes below the required zone. So, I know I am just cheating myself if I stop. Supplements You Should not Take

Every day we see different supplements jumping off the shelves or on the internet asking us to buy them. Many companies insist you take a small packet of all their supplements in one day. Just how many supplements do we need? There are some who take as many as 20 supplements per day! Is this all necessary?
Are we absorbing and utilizing all these tablets and capsules in our body or are they just sitting there and being eliminated with no use, and maybe some harm to our body?

The Truth
In large amounts supplements can be toxic. In recent years, taking supplements has become almost a fad. Some people think if a little helps, more is even better. What they don't realize is that there can be toxic effects from too much of a good thing. For example, according to the National Institute of Health, Dietary Supplement Fact Sheet:
Vitamin A - has been reported to be toxic to pregnant women who take 10,000 IU or higher amounts per day. There is an increase risk of birth defects and osteoporosis with high intake of Vitamin A. For adults 2000 to 5000 IU is sufficient.
Vitamin C - in high doses can cause diarrhea and gastrointestinal problems.
Niacin - high doses can be toxic to the liver. Physicians may prescribe it as treatment for high cholesterol.
Selenium - this popular antioxidant does have an ugly side. Take too much and you can experience the toxic effects which include skin and nail changes, tooth decay, and nervous system problems.
Comfrey - works well for helping with wound healing as a poultice, or as tea to sooth the stomach. Ingestion of the herb itself can result in liver damage.
Echinacea - is a potent immune system stimulant. It should not be taken during pregnancy. If taken for more than 8 consecutive weeks, may be toxic to the liver.
Feverfew - should not be taken while pregnant or breastfeeding. MAY CAUSE MISCARRIAGE.
Kava - useful as a sleep aid, but it has been associated with liver damage.
Licorice - taking in high amounts, can cause headache, fatigue, high blood pressure, heart problems, and water rentention. Should not be taken by infants or children. Licorice is found in many brands of popular toothpaste and other personal care products.
Sassafras - marketed as a dietary supplement for treatment of skin diseases, as a stimulant, and many other uses. It is banned by the FDA as a food additive, since studies reported cancer in rats and mice.
Senna - sold as tea, capsules, tablets or syrup and promoted as a laxative. Long term use can result in dehydration due to excessive loss of potassium.
What we really need:
Let's keep it simple. A good multi vitamin/mineral supplement will help establish whatever is lacking in our food. Omega 3,6,9 is also helpful for a healthy heart along with coenzyme Q 10, which studies show is also good for the heart and possibly gum disease. Women also need a calcium (preferably in the citrate form) supplement with magnesium, zinc and vitamin D.
Any herbal supplements should be taken only if recommended by your physician.

The goal in any fat loss exercise regimen is to choose activities that consume large amounts of oxygen. This is because the body burns 5 calories for every liter of oxygen that it consumes.

Therefore, what do you think would be the best type of cardio to do for fat loss?

Well, let's look at the typical options. Running, biking, swimming, elliptical, rowing, walking, stair climbing/stair master, upper body ergometer, and obviously many outdoor sports such as cross-country skiing.

So there are many forms of cardio to choose from and they all work. It's important to always remember that. All forms of exercise will work in the long run given the right training program and consistent effort.

But we're interested in not only what works but works what best for burning fat! We want to get the best bang for our buck, right?

Since the goal is to maximize oxygen consumption (and thus VO2) it is essential to find activities that will recruit the greatest amount of muscle. This is because the more muscle that is needed to perform an activity or movement, the more oxygen that will be needed to supply those working muscles. Make sense?

Oxygen is the precursor to all the energy your body produces. Your working muscles need oxygen otherwise they will quickly fatigue and will be unable to perform their functions.

It is well known that athletes in sports that require large amounts of muscle have the highest VO2 max (maximum aerobic capacity) because their sports demand a massive supply of oxygen to their working muscles. As such, the highest VO2 max on record exist not in runners (as many would think) but rather cross-country skiers and rowers.

Think about that for a second. Both cross-country skiing and rowing involve just about muscle in the body working against resistance. Both the upper body and lower body muscles are pushing and pulling a given resistance which makes these sports not only great aerobic training tools but also fantastic fat burning cardio machines.

If you've ever watched Olympic rowing you will have undoubtedly noticed towering men and women stacked with large and lean muscles. Most of the male rowers are upwards of 6'4'' and 220 lbs of shear muscle, making them calorie-burning machines.

These male and female rowers can get away with their large frames because rowing is not a true weight-bearing sport. In fact, this terrific sport idealizes large muscular athletes because they can produce a lot of power, both aerobically and muscularly, through their large muscle mass.

However, If you took these same rowers and asked them to run at the same intensities at which they row, they would most likely have a difficult time - not only because of the specific nature of running but also because they would be "carrying" a lot of mass.

How many 6'4", 220 lbs runners do you know of? Most runners are slim and slight. It simply makes their movement much easier. Less weight to carry means less effort. If you have a tough time envisioning this, then I encourage you to go for a run with a 20 lbs pack on your torso. You will immediately notice the difference.

Similarly, most cross-skiers don't exhibit the same physical stature as rowers. However, their aerobic capacity is astronomical. Yet, they are more similar to runners in physical stature as cross-country skiing is a weight-bearing sport and thus does not reward athletes with lots of weight, even if it's muscle.

Rowing, vigorous effort

As you can see from the above chart, running burns more calories than other activities, at the same intensity. It is therefore the most effective type of cardio for burning fat and helping you lose weight.

There are two main reasons for this.

First, running is weight bearing which means that the muscles of your lower body must work harder to support you and propel you forward; thus, expending more calories. Therefore, the heavier you are, the more calories you will burn (assuming equal intensity as someone who is lighter).

Second, running is one of the least efficient of human movements, which means that it produces a lot of heat/energy expenditure for its movement. This also means that a lot of calories are being spent. This is great for those who want to lose weight but not so great for those looking for efficient modes of movement.

But it makes sense if you think about it. Cycling is easier than running, right? That's because cycling is one of the most mechanically efficient human movements, meaning that more of the energy you put into the movement actually results in movement (and not as much heat production as running!)

But we're interested in what burns calories and fat, right? Therefore, running is your best option. Find me an overweight runner and I'll be amazed.

Quick and Easy Low Calorie Vegetarian Recipes

The shops these days are full of all sorts of goodies suitable for the vegetarian. So longer do you have to satisfy yourself with an omelette or salad. And because there is such choice you can choose low calorie options.

Also there are now a number of meat substitutes if you wan to go that way. Vegetarian bacon - yes really - look in the frozen food cabinet - adds that something to lots of dishes and I frequently use it, even when cooking for omnivores.

Rice Salad

This has quite a long list of ingredients, but is still quick and easy.
I haven't given amounts as you can alter them to suit what you have available and how many diners there are.

Cold cooked rice - a large cupful per person
Pineapple chunks
Vegetarian bacon, 3 rashers per person
A deseeded, finely sliced chilli
Some coriander or basil
A few salted cashews or dry roasted peanuts ( too many puts the calorie count up of course.)
Juice of lime or lemon
Crisply fried onion

Cooked vegetables such as sweet corn, peas, asparagus pieces and snowpeas.
Mix together the rice, chilli and pineapple. Fry the vegetarian bacon rashers in a non stick pan. They take only seconds so keep an eye on them. Either fry your onions, sliced thinly or reheat previously fried ones. Add the cooked vegetables and the nuts to the rice mixture. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice. Crumble the bacon rashers and mix in. Arrange on a plate. Decorate with the chopped herbs and the crispy onion pieces. Non vegetarians might want some prawns or cooked flaked fish in place of the bacon pieces.

No Oil Lemon and Parsley Salad Dressing

There isn't much point in having a salad if you cover it in high fat dressing, but it does taste good. Well so does this and there is absolutely no guilt attached.

¾ cup water
2 Tablespoons o arrowroot powder
Juice of one lemon
¾ cup finely chopped parsley ( You may want to substitute cilantro or add a little tarragon)
pinch of salt

Either a deseeded chopped chilli (You could use dried flakes) or two teaspoons of finely chopped sweet/bell pepper.
Mix the water and arrowroot well and then cook until thickened. Allow to cool and then place all ingredients in a screw top jar. Replace lid tightly. Shake well. Will keep for a few days in the fridge.

Stuffed Squash

Butternut or acorn squash is what I generally have available, but the recipe can be used to stuff other vegetables such as bell peppers and eggplants ( aubergines).
Serves 8 as stuffing.

You need for each person ½ a squash or eggplant or a whole sweet bell pepper.
½ cup raisins , sultanas or chopped dried apricots
I cup vegetable stock
2 finely chopped onions

1 Garlic clove, crushed

2 Apples, peeled, cored & diced, about 1 1/2 Cup
I stick of celery diced

1 1/2 Cups crumbs from 7-grain bread or other whole grain bread, toasted slightly in
ungreased fry pan

2 teaspoons of salt

1 - 2 teaspoon of herbs - a mix of herbes de Provence is good

Grated peel of one lemon

If using squash halve and remove seeds. For peppers cut off and retain a cap and deseed. For egg plants remove stem piece and halve, making a slight hollow.
You may need to cut a small piece off the squashes and egg plants so that they will sit level in dish.

Bake the vegetables cut side down in a medium oven for 50 minutes on a lightly oiled baking tray. While this is going on heat up the stock and then use this to soak your dried fruit.

Saute the onion and celery for about 5 minutes and then add the apple pieces and the garlic for a further 3 or 4 minutes. Now place this mixture in a large bowl and combine with all the other stuffing ingredients. It should be quite moist. Use to stuff your vegetables. Return them to the oven and bake fro a further 15 minutes.
